. I have included some day trips to attractions that are close to Las Vegas. You can drive to these attractions in a few hours, spend some time seeing the sights and be back on the Strip the same evening. The overnight trips are to attractions a bit further from the city or ones that deserve more sightseeing time. Finally, I include a couple of extended driving tours that take you to multiple attractions in the Southwest and require several days on the road.

Las Vegas is a great jumping-off point to begin your exploration of the beautiful Southwest of the USA. It is centrally located in the midst of some of the most spectacular geological features found anywhere in our country. Stunning attractions like the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Death Valley and Zion National Park are all within a day’s drive of Las Vegas. In addition, you can see all the glitz and glamour of the most popular man-made tourist attraction in the USA, Las Vegas.

Northeastern Driving Tour. New York City is a great place to begin a driving tour of northeastern USA. There are three major airports serving this city, JFK International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark International just across the river in New Jersey. That makes it easy to fly there from just about anywhere in the world.

Atlantic City was once famous as a popular beach resort with seaside accommodations and summer vacation homes. Today, it is more famous for its collection of lavish gambling casinos and high quality entertainment. Atlantic City resembles Las Vegas on a much smaller scale. You can find some really good entertainment with famous performers and renown acts especially on weekends.

New York City offers many attractions like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Times Square, the United Nations, Broadway Theater, museums, art galleries, thousands of restaurants and plenty of night life. I suggest you do not rent a car until you see all of the sights in the city. A car can be a liability in New York. Driving in Manhattan can be a nightmare and parking is very expensive. It is better to use the public transportation to see the city, then rent a car when you are ready to leave. You can pick up a rental car at several locations in Manhattan or you can take a bus to Newark Airport to rent a car and completely avoid driving in New York City.

Baltimore is an old seaport city situated on the western shore of the great Chesapeake Bay. It is 200 miles (300 km) south of New York City and just 35 (60 km) miles north of Washington DC. Route 95 takes you from Baltimore to New York in less than four hours, to Philadelphia in less than two hours and to Washington DC in less than one hour. This is another good place to start your driving tour, as the local Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is a gateway to many international and domestic flights.

If you begin your road trip at another location and drive to New York City, I suggest you stay at a hotel in Secaucus New Jersey just a few miles from Manhattan. You can take advantage of nicer lodgings at lower prices, park your car for free and ride a bus into the city.

The San Juan Islands of Washington state are located approximately 150 miles north of Seattle in the midst of the great ocean inlet formed by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia. They consist of a cluster of picturesque islands with rocky shorelines that are covered in dense forests and rolling farmlands. San Juan Island, Orcas Island and Lopez Island are the largest.
Anacortes

You can reach the San Juan Islands by driving 100 miles north of Seattle on Interstate 5, then going west another 20 miles on route 20 to the village of Anacortes. From there, the Washington State Ferries take you to any of the major islands. A favorite destination with visitors is Friday Harbor, a quaint fishing village on San Juan Island. The voyage takes 60 to 90 minutes and passes some breathtaking scenery as it wends its way through the narrow straits between islands. A roundtrip fare costs $35 for an auto with driver. Passengers and pedestrians pay $10 for a roundtrip ticket.

The best place to view the whales from land is at the Whale Watch Park on the western side of San Juan Island. There is no entry fee. The rocky promontory surrounding the little lighthouse provides an unobstructed view of the Orca’s favorite fishing grounds, and the whales can easily be seen on most days. Some people prefer to rent a kayak from one of the suppliers so they can paddle along the shoreline in search of the pods. A four-hour guided expedition costs about $75 per person. If you are lucky, you can glide right through the midst of a pod and watch the massive black and white hulks rise huffing and blowing spray right beside your little boat.

Some people go to these islands just to relax and appreciate the scenery. You can hike, rent a bike or just drive around the islands visiting the dense redwood forest, the rocky promontories and the tiny fishing villages nestled in the sheltered inlets. Many people go to fish in the adjacent waters with their bountiful schools of Salmon and Lingcod. Some rent kayaks in order to explore the coastal cliffs with their rookeries of wildfowl, to glide through the midst of the mighty killer whales as they cavort in the straits, and to spy the majestic eagles soaring above.

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Hoover Dam is located about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on Highway 93. It straddles the Colorado River at Black Canyon, a deep narrow defile on the border between the states of Nevada and Arizona. It was originally called Boulder Dam, and the nearby city of Boulder, Nevada was created to house the workers building this amazing wonder of engineering. You can easily drive to Boulder City and Hoover Dam from Las Vegas in less than one hour.

Once you pass through Boulder City Nevada on your way to Hoover Dam, you will see the large steel electric transmission towers that transport the hydroelectric energy from the dam to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and many other southwestern cities. You will come to a scenic pullout that overlooks Lake Mead. Finally, you will descend part way into Black Canyon via a winding precipitous road that provides you with tantalizing glimpses of the massive dam. Unfortunately, you are not permitted to stop or to pull off the road to savor the view.

Hoover Dam is one of the largest dams in the world. It is 726 feet high (232 m) and 1244 feet long (379 m). It impounds the waters of the largest reservoir in the USA, Lake Mead. It is worth seeing.

You can access the shores of Lake Mead from several locations off of route 166, also known as Lakeshore Scenic Drive, or from route 167 east of Las Vegas. You can access Lake Mohave from route 95 south of Las Vegas on the Nevada side or from route 93 southwest of Hoover Dam on the Arizona side.

The city of Boulder is a small desert community that offers a quiet alternative to the glitz of Las Vegas. It has a modest selection of restaurants, shops, boutiques and stores that cater to the local residents as well as to the tourists coming to visit the nearby dam. This is a pleasant place to stop for lunch while on an afternoon excursion to Hoover Dam.

Kennedy Florida USA Travel

Kennedy Spacecenter Visitor Complex. The John F. Kennedy space center is located on the central Atlantic coast of Florida about 50 miles (75 km) due east of Orlando and midway between Miami and Jacksonville. The actual spaceport and launch facilities are located on nearby Cape Canaveral, a vast peninsula with restricted public access. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, just outside of the cape is open to the public daily from 9 AM until 5 PM. It includes many exhibits, films and displays, plus it offers opportunities to tour the actual spaceport and launch facility.

Bus tours of the Kennedy Spaceport Launch Complex depart from the visitor center at frequent intervals and are included with your admission. The tours take you to the huge vehicle assembly building where the gigantic rockets are fully assembled prior to launch, to the huge crawler platforms that slowly transport the fully assembled rockets several miles out to the launch sites, and to views of one of the launch platforms.

The admission prices are $29 for adults and $19 for children. That includes access to all exhibits and films plus a bus tour of the spaceport and launch facility. Normally, tickets are readily available at the space center or you can purchase them on line from this web page: www.kennedyspacecenter.com/groupsCorporate/index.asp

You can watch an actual space launch if you are in the area on the right date. It is possible to park along the highway (with thousands of other spectators) several miles from the cape and see the rocket liftoff and disappear into space. You can no longer get passes that permit you to park along the causeway on the cape due to new security precautions. If you are really eager to see a launch up-close, you can go to the Space Center web site and purchase one of the limited number of launch viewing passes that allow you to view the launch from a special visitors area on the cape.

For an extra twenty dollars, you can choose one of the “NASA Up Close” tours that are narrated by an expert guide. All of the tours are restricted on launch days, so you should check the launch schedule before planning your visit. Beaches Florida USA Travel

Florida Beaches. There are a lot of beaches to choose from in Florida. The state is surrounded by ocean on three sides and has over 800 miles of beach front with thousands of miles of additional shoreline on the many bays and inlets. As is common along most of the eastern coast of the US, the Florida beaches are usually located on long narrow islands or sand bars separated from the mainland by back bays or salt water marshes. The beaches are usually accessible via long bridges or causeways.

It would be impractical to describe every beach in Florida, so we will limit this page to some general descriptions. The beaches can be categorized into three general locations: the Atlantic beaches, the Gulf Coast beaches and the Florida Keys.

The Atlantic Coast beaches on the eastern shores of the state offer the best surf and attract the most tourists. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Daytona and Jacksonville are the most popular. They offer high rise hotels, nightspots, and plenty of tourist diversions. If you seek excitement, entertainment and nightlife these are good beaches for you. If you want more sedate accommodations, you might prefer Cocoa beach or the Saint Augustine area.

The Gulf Coast beaches on the western coast offer warmer, calmer waters and great sunsets. Clearwater beach, just outside the Tampa - Saint Petersburg area, is the only highly commercialized beach on the Gulf coast. The remaining beaches tend to attract more full time residents and “snow birds” or visitors seeking to escape the usual tourist crowds.

The Florida keys, as they call the archipelago of tropical isles that stretch more than a hundred miles south of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico, offer some unique beaches. They are extremely shallow with rough coral bottoms and calm crystal clear water. It is possible to wade out hundreds of meters from shore in the shallow waters and watch the colorful fishes swim around your feet. Snorkeling and fishing are the favorite activities in the keys.

Ontario Niagara Canada USA Travel

. Niagara Falls Ontario is located just across the river from Niagara Falls New York with the great waterfall situated right between these twin cities. The Canadian side offers the best views of Niagara Falls and has a very different character than its counterpart in the USA. Niagara Falls Ontario is much more commercialized and tourist oriented than Niagara Falls New York. On the Canadian-side, the escarpment overlooking the falls has a beautiful park with well-manicured gardens, but just behind that, the hill is covered with high-rise hotels, casinos and numerous tourist attractions. The adjacent streets are filled with museums, souvenir shops, gaming arcades, restaurants, clubs and tourist attractions of all kinds. If you don’t mind all of the commercialism, Niagara Falls Ontario offers more to see and more to do than Niagara Falls New York.

The main attraction in Niagara Falls is naturally the waterfall, and the Canadian view is magnificent. A rock escarpment adjacent to the falls provides a wonderful viewing platform with panoramic views of the Horseshoe Falls as well as the smaller American Falls. This shelf of rock several hundred meters wide and a kilometer long has been converted into the beautiful Victoria Park. Niagara Parkway which becomes River Road through the park can become quite congested with gawking sightseers during the popular tourist season. The best way to fully view the falls is to park your car and explore it afoot. Plan on seeing it in early morning or late afternoon when a gleaming rainbow shines incessantly in the mists, and see it at night when the colored spotlights create an illuminated spectacle.

The main border crossing between Niagara Falls New York and Niagara Falls Ontario is via the Rainbow Bridge that spans the Niagara River Gorge just a few hundred meters below the falls. Unfortunately, this bridge can become quite congested especially on weekends during the summer vacation season and traffic may back up several kilometers forcing you to wait an hour or more to cross. With a bit of foresight, you can avoid the annoying delays.

You can cross the Niagara River into Canada on the Peace Bridge in Buffalo New York approximately 25 miles south of the falls. Once you reach the Canadian side of the border, you can either take a quick trip along the Queen Elizabeth Highway to Niagara Falls, or you can take the scenic drive along the Niagara River Parkway. As an alternate, you can cross the river and enter Canada at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge about 5 miles north of the falls, then take the spectacularly scenic Niagara River Parkway along the Niagara Gorge to the falls.

. Vancouver, British Columbia is the largest and possibly the most beautiful city in the westernmost province of Canada. It is located just 24 miles (38 km) north of the US border and less than a three-hour drive from Seattle, Washington. The city is situated at the Fraser River Delta on the Pacific Coast. Eighteen surrounding communities spread over the adjacent 2930 square kilometer area make it a large vibrant metropolitan center. Vancouver is 60 miles (96 km) northeast of Victoria, the capitol of British Columbia, located on the southern tip of nearby Vancouver Island.

Vancouver contains dozens of parks and botanical gardens. Stanley Park, at the tip of the downtown peninsula, encompasses 1000 acres (400 hectares) of sports and recreational facilities including vast tracts of preserved Douglas fir wilderness and 8 km of picturesque seawall. Attractions include the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center, a rose garden, totem poles and many miles of trails for walking, jogging or riding in horse-drawn carriages. Queen Elizabeth Park, atop Little Mountain in the central part of the city, contains a magnificent arboretum and spectacular panoramic views of the city. On most mornings, hundreds of Tai Chi practitioners work out in these beautiful hilltop gardens.

The city of Vancouver sits in the midst of some spectacular scenery. The Ocean Strait of Georgia frames its western edges with the great harbor basin of English Bay and Burrard Inlet to the north. Across the inlet, high mountain peaks rise directly out of its northern suburbs. More lofty mountains define its eastern horizon.

If you want to shop for souvenirs or gifts, the Gastown district has a wide selection of local products including Inuit and Native American art. Chinatown offers Asian goods of all types while the Little India section south of downtown offers a wide variety of unique Indian products. The market on Granville Island has fresh fruit, produce and baked goods plus artistic creations. For serious shoppers, there are the Pacific Centre Mall and the Royal Centre Mall downtown, the Metrotown Mall in Burnaby, Oakridge Centre Mall on Cambie Street or the Lansdowne Centre Mall in Richmond. Asia Center in Richmond is a unique shopping mall that features all sorts of Asian made products.

Downtown Vancouver sits astride the hilly spine of a small peninsula jutting into the bay. It is composed of an interesting mixture of high-rise office buildings, hotels and apartments interspersed with many private homes and lower structures containing small shops, restaurants and boutiques. It exudes the atmosphere of a large cosmopolitan city and simultaneously of a small intimate town. The northern tip of this peninsula is devoted to Stanley Park, one of the finest urban recreational areas in North America. The remainder of the peninsula is covered with various interesting neighborhoods featuring shopping, business, restaurants, theaters and urban living.

Universal Studios Escape. Universal Studios Escape in Orlando Florida is making a strong effort to compete with Disney World, and they are off to a good start. With the recent opening of Universal’s new theme park called Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Escape now has two full-sized theme parks and a City Walk area, to compete with Disney’s four theme parks, and Downtown Disney area. Universal also opened its luxurious Portofino Bay Hotel, the first of several new on-property hotels scheduled to open in the next few years. Universal’s continued expansions are ensuring its status as a must-see attraction in the Orlando area.

The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman ride is possibly the most modern high-tech ride in world. A moving vehicle combined with state-of-the-art 3D holographic technology transports the rider into a visual reality comic book adventure. It is well worth experiencing. There are also several state-of-the-art roller coasters, and plenty of water rides to cool you off. Put this all this together and you get, arguably, the best theme park in Orlando today.

Universal Studios Escape is a resort complex with two theme parks, a Citiwalk shopping, dining and entertainment area and three hotels. The two theme parks are the original Universal Studios Florida and the new Islands of Adventure. Universal Studios Florida is a movie theme park containing rides and attractions based on movies and television shows, as well as some behind the scenes looks at movie and television making techniques. The park is similar in nature to Disney’s MGM studios.
Toon Lagoon

All of these hotels will be located in the Universal Escape Resort with easy access to the parks. Guests at Universal hotels enjoy a number of benefits including early theme park admission on select days and front-of-the-line access until 10:00AM for some of the more popular rides. Other benefits include room-charging privileges throughout the resort and package deliveries to your room.

Islands of Adventure is a new fantasy theme park, similar in layout to Disney’s Magic Kingdom, but with some notable differences. The entire park is filled with completely new high-tech rides, attractions, restaurants and shops. It is super clean, very functional and filled with the latest technology. The park is divided into several themed areas including Marvel Super Hero Island and Jurassic Park. Two of the areas, Toon Lagoon and Seuss Landing, are particularly suited for younger visitors.

Disney World. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is not just a theme park, but a huge resort complex covering 47 square miles. The resort contains four separate theme parks, three water parks and 99 holes of golf on several different courses. Miles of outdoor recreation are available including hiking, biking, boating and swimming. It has three separate areas containing shopping, dining and entertainment facilities as well as a fourth area with nightclubs. A fairly new addition to the resort is the state of the art sports complex where Disney hosts a wide variety of sporting events. Finally, there are about 18 Disney owned and operated hotels and several non-Disney hotels in the resort. All this combined with many other attractions in the Orlando and central Florida area can be quite overwhelming.
Cinderella’s Castle

No other Disney resort comes close to the size and diversity of Disney World Florida. If you have previously visited one of the other Disney resorts such as Disneyland California, Disneyland Paris or the new Disneyland Tokyo, you should still visit Disney World in Orlando, Florida. All other Disney resorts consist of a single theme park and are quite small compared to the massive resort complex in Florida. Each of the other parks are no larger than the Magic Kingdom theme park in Disney World, which is only one small part of the complex. Remember, that only the resort in Orlando, Florida is referred to as Disney World or Walt Disney World. The other parks are usually called Disneyland. The size and diversity of the Disney World resort ensures that it will probably remain the number one vacation destination in the world for years to come.

Magic Kingdom, the first theme park built at the resort, has rides, shows and attractions divided among seven fantasy areas. This is the place to find all your favorite Disney characters and attractions.

Disney World offers lots of outdoor recreation. It has five challenging 18-hole golf courses as well as a 9-hole beginner’s course and a 36-hole miniature golf course for family fun. If you prefer tennis there are many courts throughout the resort including Disney’s Contemporary Resort Racquet Club. Water sports are plentiful including water-skiing, parasailing, fishing and many types of boat rental. For the extremely adventurous, there is the Richard Petty driving experience where you can drive an actual Nascar racing car. The car has about 600 hp and can attain speeds of up to 160 mph.

Epcot, the second theme park built at the resort, is divided into two areas: Future World and World Showcase. The attractions in Future World are based on modern and futuristic advances in communication, transportation, energy, agriculture and much more. World Showcase allows you to explore culture, cuisine, shopping and entertainment from many countries including Canada, UK, France, Japan, Morocco, US, Italy, Germany, China, Norway and Mexico.
